World’s first women to have cycled on Biafo Glacier

Samar Khan, 26 year old from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa became world’s first woman to have cycled 4,500 meters high Biafo Glacier in the Karakoram Mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan.

She holds a master’s degree in physics. Moreover, Samar loves paragliding, trekking, mountain climbing and cycling. She developed an interest in cycling while at the university. Samar first major ride was from Islamabad to Khunjerab Pass in 2015. She also cycled from Minaar-e-Pakistan to Waagah border in Lahore, along with other cyclists.

Before going for Biafo, Samar trained herself for six months. She trekked on the weekends, routinely visited the gym. She started her trip from Islamabad to Skardu on July 24 and had covered more than 1,000 kilometers in 15 days, then traveled from Shagar region for three days and ended up in Biafo Glacier.

In an interview, she said “You don’t need a trainer, you don’t need very expensive equipment and you can ride in the rain or snow,” she said. “It’s pleasant, healthy and good for the environment”
